CAML is an in-house concept introducing mass customizable furniture and a customization tool. The CAML tool allows customers to modify pre-designed furniture to fit their individual needs.
In 2018 CAML received the Finnish Design Museums Design Club grant for the development of the concept.
How does it work? The customer is allowed to define the colour, width, height and all kinds of individual parts such as gliders. This customization tool inspires the user to try different styles and versions of the same furniture.
Instead of changes would happen just by clicking different options, the process is designed to kind of lure the customer into the manufacturing process by making them paint the colour themselves and add the different parts to the furniture.
Mass customization itself is not a new thing, but in CAML it works a bit differently. After the order is placed, the stool is manufactured with CAM tube bending technique and CNC milling methods. To keep manufacturing costs low, the process is as automated as possible, Tube bending was chosen to be the main manufacturing method as it is cheap, fast and relatively easy to execute. The frame of the furniture is designed so that it is easy to produce in different heights and widths.
